Fresno State historian Dr. Jesus Luna kicked off the Cinco de Mayo Tardeada May 5 with his talk "What Is Cinco de Mayo?" followed by music performances. Food booths beckoned the hungry while the university's own student mariachi group made its public debut at the tardeada. Under the direction of music professor Manuel Peña, El Mariachi Anahuac de Fresno State is one of the few university mariachi bands in the nation.

During the Dia de Los Niños (May 6), Niños de Aztlan, a community dance group for ages 11-12, performed traditional Mexican folklore dances culminating with a celebration of piñatas.

The Semana de la Raza celebrations (May 3-7) featured cultural, social and educational tributes and activities with an emphasis on community involvement.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico's victory over French forces in Puebla, Mexico, on May 5, 1862, and is celebrated throughout Mexico and the United States.
