University begins its Web redesign

Fresno State's Web site will likely have a new navigation scheme and a new look in time to greet the year 2000. An internal Web team has begun the redesign task by chronicling shortcomings of the university's current site and by surveying hundreds of other college and university sites around the country.

President John Welty has approved a Web redesign process that places hands-on responsibility in a cross-departmental team. In addition to the redesign of "front-door" pages, the team also will propose standards and guidelines for all official, departmental sites across the university. The team includes Greg Gaither and Michael Juarez in ITS, Candace Egan in Academic Affairs, and Carolyn Skei, Priscilla Helling, Kay Conner and April Schulthies in University Relations. The team is being coordinated by John Zelezny, the assistant vice president for university relations.

The team's work will be guided by an advisory committee that met for the first time last week. Committee members include Brent Aurenheimer (Computer Science), Robin Button (Criminology), John Cagle (Communications), Carol Munshower (International Student Services and Programs), Hye Ok Park (Madden Library), Dick Nordstrom (Marketing), Jeff Ennen (ATI-Net) and Tom Ebert (Academic Affairs).

Zelezny said of the next phase of Web development, "The rapidly advancing environment of university Web sites has convinced many faculty, staff, students and administrators on campus that a major overhaul of Fresno State's site is necessary."
