Thanks to a U. S. Department of State Community Connections grant, nine Russian visitors (photo background) are being introduced to the ways non-governmental organizations work in America. Dr. Al Evans (right), grant project director and professor of political science, has been hosting the Russian emissaries, who are still on campus to learn how to introduce more philanthropic endeavors into their communities. Faye Seigel (left), executive director of the Leukemia Society, is one community leader who shared information with the group.
The group hails from Kostroma - a city of more than 280,000 residents on the Volga River, 372 kilometers northeast of Moscow. The group includes officers of non-governmental organizations such as youth groups, environmental groups, and affiliations that defend the rights of people with disabilities. Other members are journalists and small business owners.
On Oct. 26, in a final symposium, the emissaries will discuss what they have learned and how their encounters will benefit the organizations in Kostroma. For information call (559) 278-3005.
