LIGHTING THE NIGHT

A rally against violence

"Men and women need to stand in solidarity against violence and for the right of every individual, woman or man, to walk freely by day and by night without fear of violence." -- Francine Oputa (coordinator, Women's Resource Center)

A number of men joined with several women's groups in the annual rally and candlelight march on campus Oct. 20.

Dr. Judy Sakaki addressed the crowd gathered to take a stand against violence toward women.

Some participants wore placards memorializing individuals who had died from acts of domestic violence while others pinned ribbons on the Spiral of Healing board

for themselves or for a loved one. The color of the ribbon indicated a different act of violence perpetrated on women or children. For some it was the first time they had acknowledged that the violence had occurred.

Several 911 tapes of children's calls to report abuses were played as the audience sat in stunned silence.
