Food Science course helps make industry safe

A new California Law (Assembly Bill 1978) effective Jan. 1, 2000, requires food facilities that handle or serve unpackaged foods to have an owner, manager or employee certified in food protection by the educational foundation of the National Restaurant Association (NRA).

The Center for Food Science and Nutrition Research, part of the California Agricultural Technology Institute (CATI) at Fresno State, will be offering ServSafe courses. The course is an approved training and certification program for food and restaurant facilities and designed to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses and maintain a healthy and safe work environment for employees and customers.

The ServSafe courses are for either one eight-hour session or for two five-hour sessions. The fee ranges from $99 to $119 and course locations are at Fresno State and Saint Agnes Total Life Center.
