The man who was president of Fresno State from 1948 to 1964 died May 28 in Danville, Calif., at age 96. President Emeritus Arnold E. Joyal served the university during the period when the present Shaw Avenue campus site was acquired and the initial buildings were constructed. It was during his presidency that the university was first authorized to offer the master of arts and master of science degrees.
After his retirement from Fresno State, Joyal moved to Danville and served as professor of educational administration at California State University, Hayward until his final retirement from part-time teaching in 1979 at age 77. He was an expert in school finance and school law, and supervised the theses of numerous graduate students in educational administration.
A native of Quebec, Joyal visited every state and more than
50 foreign countries on every continent except Antarctica. He
maintained active correspondences with friends and family members
and continued to read widely in his 96th year. Joyal and his wife,
Evelyn, were married for 71 years. Other survivors include his
daughter, Dorothy Christopher of Los Angeles, his son, Arnold
Jr., and his grandson, Scott, both of Los Gatos.
