The Smittcamp Family Honors College became the beneficiary of
an unexpected gift recently when the executor of the Barbara Mabee
estate delivered a check for $91,686 to the Development Office
on campus.
The gift will enlarge the endowment for Honors College scholarships, known as President's Scholars awards, and will essentially provide full funding for one student a year.
Honors College Director Stephen Rodemeyer said he hopes similar gifts for President's Scholars will become a popular form of giving to the university.
As of this date, the Honors College has received 467 cards back from students interested in being admitted for next fall and an additional 482 recommended names from high schools around the state.
Last year there were 395 total applicants to the Honors College,
of which 50 were admitted to the program; 40 percent of the applicants
enrolled at the university.
