Good Bug, Bad Bug" was one of the sessions enjoyed by more than 100 local fourth through sixth graders during an introduction to the campus offered in mid-July by the Migrant Scholars Program.
Students from Firebaugh, Fowler, Golden Plains, Kerman, Mendota and Parlier school districts were involved in educational enrichment, career awareness, college exposure and mentoring activities.
"Our 'Good Bug, Bad Bug' session began in the classroom, and then we went out into the fields on campus, where students collected bugs that were on the crops," said Dr. Denis Bacon, instructor and technician in the Plant Science Department.
Back in the laboratory, faculty members helped students examine the specimens as they would in an authentic research project.
The students were also exposed to mathematics, computer literacy, music, biology, video production, theatre and research.
"Our objective is to expose students to a university atmosphere of learning," said Raul Moreno, director of the Migrant Scholars Program.
Migrant students at the university served as role models during the two-week program.
