Personalized license plates promoting Fresno State are now available in a campaign that will raise funds for student scholarships while increasing the visibility of the university and community.
Sponsored by the Alumni Association through the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Fresno State Collegiate License Plate Program was launched full force recently when appli-
cations were mailed to about 15,000 alumni and university supporters.
Leticia Reyna, assistant director for alumni programs, said the campaign received a strong initial response after local news coverage. She added that the Alumni Office has already received about 50 calls inquiring about the plates.
The DMV requires 5,000 pre-orders before production can begin and allows colleges one year from the date the first application is submitted to the Alumni Association to meet this goal. Reyna said she expects the clock to start ticking this month with the arrival of the first completed applications.
The Alumni Association encourages the campus community to join other Valley supporters in helping reach the goal and make the project a success.
"Show your Bulldog pride wherever you drive," is the campaign's theme, said Alumni Association President Sam Masumoto. "By purchasing your 'dog tags,' you will promote Fresno State and the community in your travels while supporting education."
The plates are standard white with the cursive, red "California" lettering across the top. A Bulldog face and the words "Fresno State" and "Bulldogs" are part of the design.
For a personalized plate with up to six characters in combination, the initial fee is $90 and renewal each year is $65. Standard sequential plates are $50 initially and $40 for renewal.
The Alumni Association can generate $50,000 in scholarships the first year and $100,000 in subsequent years, according to Jacquelyn Glasener, executive director of the Fresno State Alumni Association.
She said that Fresno State is the first in the CSU system to offer the plates and only the second in the state, behind UCLA. The CSU Chancellor's Advancement office is funding the promotion campaign as a pilot project that could spread to other campuses, Glasener said.
The DMV offers universities collegiate license plates under its Collegiate License Plate Program. Half of the revenue derived is deposited into the state's Collegiate License Plate Fund for the participating colleges to use for need-based scholarships.
License plate applications may be obtained by calling 1 (888) 4FSUDOGS (437-8364) or by e-mail: alumni@csufresno.edu.
