Children's literature festival

The Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children's Literature and the Arne Nixon Center Advocates will host "The Arne Nixon Children's Literature Festival," March 8 and 9 at the Residence Dining Hall. Registration is $59, with an additional charge of $40 for one unit of university credit.

Rekindling the passion for children's literature in the tradition of the late Professor Arne Nixon, the festival proudly presents four of America's top authors and illustrators, friends of Arne Nixon and former speakers at Fresno programs that he hosted. They are the following:

• Sid Fleischman, author of "Bo and Mzz Mad," among others. For "The Whipping Boy," he won the 1987 Newbery Medal, awarded annually by the American Library Association to the author of the year's most distinguished contribution to American Literature for Children.
• Thacher Hurd, author-illustrator of "Cat's Pajamas," "Mama Don't Allow," and many others.
• Daniel San Souci, illustrator of 35 books, including "Antelope, Bison, Cougar: A National Park Wildlife Alphabet Book" and "Ice Bear and Little Fox."
• Robert D. San Souci, author of "Little Gold Star," and "Fa Mulan," which the author rewrote for Disney's animated film "Mulan, among many others.
• Angelica Carpenter, curator of the Arne Nixon Center, will offer a tour of the center and will also discuss her three biographies for young people: Frances Hodgson Burnett, L. Frank Baum and Robert Louis Stevenson.

The speakers will autograph books at the Festival, and the books will also be available for purchase during the week before the event at the Kennel Bookstore.

Advance registration is required. Call the Arne Nixon Center at ext. 8-8116 or e-mail jcrow@csufresno.edu to request an application. On-site registration for optional university credit will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 8. Book signings by the Friday speakers will be at this time and after 8:30 p.m.

The Friday program will last from 4 to 8:30 p.m., with a dinner break included.
