Plan for Excellence II: 2001-2002

We begin the 2001-2002 academic year with a proposed draft of our new strategic plan. At the faculty and staff assemblies last week, the university's Strategic Planning Steering Committee distributed copies of the Plan for Excellence II: 2001-2006. Additional copies will be distributed this week by campus mail to all faculty and staff. The Plan for Excellence II identifies 33 new strategic goals and priorities for the university. In his remarks to faculty and staff during last week's opening assemblies, President John D. Welty emphasized that the strategic plan will guide the university's growth and development over the next five years.

The president also expressed his appreciation for the work of the co-chairs of the 10 strategic planning task forces and to all the faculty and staff who participated in the planning process. "The commitment of time, energy, expertise and resources made by these individuals will benefit all members of the university community in the years ahead," he said.

Strategic planning consultant Max Tadlock noted that the Plan for Excellence II retains the familiar title of the university's 1997 strategic plan while updating the focus and key priorities. At the faculty and staff assemblies, Tadlock noted that "once again the faculty and staff of California State University, Fresno have come together to develop an ambitious and innovative plan that will usher in a new era of greatness for this university."

More than 240 faculty and staff participated in the strategic planning review process during the spring 2001 semester, along with 50 leaders from the external community. Co-chairs of the 10 strategic planning task forces led the planning review and submitted their final recommendations to the Strategic Planning Steering Committee at the end of the spring 2001 semester. During the summer, the Steering Committee completed the final draft of the plan. The Plan for Excellence II will be presented to the Academic Senate in early September for their review and endorsement. Following the Senate's endorsement and the president's approval, the Steering Committee will then call upon members of the universitywide community to participate in the development of the implementation plan, at which time we will develop an action plan and timeline to achieve the 33 goals.

Faculty and staff are urged to read through the Plan for Excellence II: 2001-2006 and to participate in the implementation of the plan's goals. Ideas and recommendations for implementation of any of the goals identified in the new plan may be forwarded to Sandra MacNevin in the Office of the President (sandra_macnevin@csufresno.edu). All recommendations related to implementation of the new goals will be communicated to the Strategic Planning Steering Committee.

Copies of the plan are available in the Office of the President, and final reports by the 10 strategic planning task forces are available online at www.csufresno.edu/plan. For information please contact the Office of the President at ext. 8-2324.
