Several members of the English Department have had recent works published. Liza Wieland has published a new novel, "Bombshell" (SMU Press). Steve Yarbrough has published a new novel, "Visible Spirits" (Alfred A. Knopf). Odette Larson, has published a memoir, "Flying Sparks: Growing up on the Edge of Las Vegas" (Verso Press). Corrinne Hales has published a new book of poems, "Out of This Place" (March Street Press). John Hales has published an essay "Line" in the spring issue of the Georgia Review.

Honors

Sudarshan Kapoor (Social Work) was recognized recently by the Fresno City Council for his decades of work to promote peace locally and throughout the world. The council presented Kapoor a proclamation honoring his work and congratulating him on his recent appointment to the board of directors of the International Peace Research Association Foundation. Kapoor is one of 21 directors, including 13 from the United States, named to the peace foundation.

Associate Professor Charles Shields (Art and Design) was recognized with a bronze 2001 Summit Creative Award for his outstanding work for the Web site www.maltwhiskey.com. The Summit Creative Awards is the only competition of its kind. It was created to recognize exceptional creative work by smaller advertising agencies, video production companies, multimedia firms and other creative groups with annual billings of $25 million or less throughout the United States and Canada.
