John D. Welty earns top honors

One of California's leading student organizations has named President John D. Welty as their "President of the Year" for 2000-2001.

The California State Student Association presented the award to Welty recently for "the dedication he has shown to the students of California State University." The student organization commended Welty for "promoting a collaborative relationship between student leaders and administrators in the development of policy on the issue of alcohol" at California State University campuses.

Shaun R. Lumachi, chair of the California State Student Association Board of Directors, presented the award to Welty during a meeting of CSU Trustees in Long Beach.

The organization was founded by students in 1959 and represents more than 240,000 students in the California State University system. The organization has been an advocate for many improvements at CSU campuses, such as the expansion of services for disabled students and the development of campus child-care centers and student internship programs.
