Six new food outlets on campus

Fresno State has opened six new food outlets, as well as re-vamped the campus restaurant from fine dining to specialty with a new name, "Bistro 1540," in a major overhaul of the university's Food Services.

Bob Farrar, in his second year as Food Services director, said the operation's goal is to improve quality and service at a reasonable market price for the campus community.

"We will serve the freshest foods, prepared and cooked as close to order as possible with a willingness to change and grow and respond to the needs and requests of the campus community," Farrar said.

He said Food Services will offer "a diverse spectrum of currently popular foods, through branded concepts and specialty restaurants designed to accommodate the needs of the diverse campus and alumni population."

Food Services, operated under the Auxiliary Corporation, is the primary provider of prepared food products at Fresno State, running all food outlets on campus as well as concessions in athletics and a catering service that is available for use by the public.

Four new outlets will open in the Food Court located in the lower level of the University Student Union: Chix the Chicken Station, Cinnamon Street Bakery, Asian Creations and Freshens Premium Yogurt & Smoothie Co.

Maple Street BBQ, featuring an outside grill, will open in the Satellite Student Union and Bulldog Pretzel Fillers will be located in the Round Table Pizza area east of the University Center (the old cafeteria building).

Leaving the campus is Asian Express. Also gone in name and concept is the University Restaurant located on the east side of the University Center building. The restaurant, which had been operating at a loss, has been rejuvenated into "Bistro 1540," named after a survey of faculty, students and staff at Fresno State.

"We want to create a fun and eventful atmosphere, and framed artwork by campus faculty and student artists highlights the décor," Farrar said.

The second phase will result in a patio for outdoor dining with lattice-work and plants, extending the presence to the passing observer. A double door will be installed to make the patio accessible for service from the restaurant.

Existing outlets that will continue to operate are Carl's Jr., Taco Bell, Subway Sandwiches, and the Residence Dining Faculty.
