Director of Library Services Michael Gorman is shown with his book, "Our Enduring Values: Librarianship in the 21st Century," which recently became the 1,000,001st volume in the Henry Madden Library.

What comes after the Madden Library's acquisition its one-millionth volume?

Number 1,000,001, of course. And fittingly, it's a book by Michael Gorman, dean of Library Services.

The Library staff recently surprised Gorman by selecting his new book, "Our Enduring Values: Librarianship in the 21st Century," as volume 1,000,001. He was presented a plaque that reads: "The Henry Madden Library proclaims 'Our Enduring Values' by Michael Gorman to be the 1,000,001st volume in its collection. The Library's faculty and staff acknowledge and honor him for his provocative writings and unfailing advocacy for libraries and librarianship."

Gorman's book also is the winner of the 2001 Highsmith Library Literature Award, which recognizes an author who makes an outstanding contribution to library literature. The book was published by the American Library Association in 2000.

"Our Enduring Values: Librarianship in the 21st Century" was selected because we felt it was a tireless treatment of issues facing all librarians, and a well-written and well-thought-out discussion of values that would trigger much further discussion and self-examination," award committee chair Eric Johnson said.

Gorman has authored numerous publications and articles in professional and scholarly journals, and was the first editor of the "Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules," second edition. He has given numerous presentations at international, national and state conferences.

An active member of ALA, Gorman was president of the Library & Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of ALA, 1999-2000, and contributing editor of American Libraries, 1997-1999. He has won numerous awards, including the ALA Melvil Dewey Medal.

Gorman is a fellow of the British Library Association and has taught at library schools in his native Britain and the United States. He also was a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Library and Information Science.
