Matthew A. Jendian (Sociology), director of the American Humanics
Certificate Program in Nonprofit Management and Leadership at
California State University, Fresno, has been awarded a Doctorate
of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the University of Southern California.
His dissertation, titled "Assimilation and Ethnicity: Adaptation
Patterns and Ethnic Identity of Armenian-Americans in Central
California," was generated from his analysis of roughly 300
completed surveys of individuals of Armenian descent residing
in the four-county Central San Joaquin Valley. The primary thesis
challenged the traditional sociological view of assimilation and
ethnicity, and evidence is found for the persistence of ethnicity
amid a host of assimilation characteristics.
