Matthew A. Jendian (Sociology), director of the American Humanics Certificate Program in Nonprofit Management and Leadership at California State University, Fresno, has been awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the University of Southern California. His dissertation, titled "Assimilation and Ethnicity: Adaptation Patterns and Ethnic Identity of Armenian-Americans in Central California," was generated from his analysis of roughly 300 completed surveys of individuals of Armenian descent residing in the four-county Central San Joaquin Valley. The primary thesis challenged the traditional sociological view of assimilation and ethnicity, and evidence is found for the persistence of ethnicity amid a host of assimilation characteristics.

Publications
James M. Cypher (Economics) published "Developing Disarticulation Within the Mexican Economy" in the May 2001 volume of "Latin American Perspectives." His was the lead article in a two volume series on "Mexico in the 1990s".
Karla Hutchens (Procurement and Support Services) has published a new book of poetry, "Three Dimensional Thoughts For The New Millennium" (Watermark Press).
Richard Pinkerton's (Professor Emeritus) article "Business-to-Business Procurement - The Current Revolution Within Supply Chain Management" appeared in World Markets Series Business Briefing: European Purchasing and Supply Chain Strategies, May 2001.

College of Social Sciences Dean
Ellen Gruenbaum's new book, "The Female Circumcision Controversy: An Anthropological Perspective" (University of Pennsylvania Press, $24.95), was reviewed during the summer by the London Times Literary Supplement. She will lead a discussion and book signing at Barnes and Noble Booksellers at 7 p.m. on Oct. 18.
