California Gov. Gray Davis was in Fresno Oct. 22 to receive a briefing from the California National Guard on airport security before visiting the California State University, Fresno campus to speak to the then nationally-ranked Fresno State Bulldog football team.

Davis announced that he had proclaimed Friday, Oct. 26, as "Fresno State Bulldogs Football Day" in California to honor the highest football ranking ever achieved by a California State University team. The 'Dogs had climbed as high as No. 8 in national polls before losses to Boise State and Hawaii.

After those losses, the Bulldogs came back with an overwhelming 52-24 win over Rice Nov. 2. Fresno State President John Welty presented Gov. Davis with a Bulldogs sweatshirt and a copy of the Sports Illustrated that featured Fresno State and was autographed by quarterback David Carr.
