Moll heads new Public Safety unit

David Moll and Michael Dunlap

The university's safety services have been combined into one administrative operation, the Department of Public Safety, which will be directed by David Moll, formerly director of Environmental Health and Safety.

The new unit combines the functions of University Police, Risk Management, Key Control, Environmental Protection, Parking, Worker's Compensation and Occupational Safety.

Steven Martinez has been promoted to director of Environmental Health and Safety. He was the assistant director.

Michael Dunlap, a veteran law enforcement official, has been named interim police chief, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Lynn Button. Dunlap will serve for up to a year, or until a permanent chief is named.

Dunlap, 61, was chief of police in Parlier from March 2001 to March 2002. He also has served as a police officer in Redlands, Bishop Area commander for the California Highway Patrol and Inyo County undersheriff.

He is a recipient of the State of California Medal of Valor for a rescue, at great personal risk to himself, of four people from a vehicle fire.

Moll said a search for a new police chief will begin after a review of the processes and procedures in the new Department of Public Safety. Once the review is completed and any necessary changes are made, a nationwide search to fill the position will begin.
