Portable Dance Troupe leads off spring lineup

The Portable Dance Troupe, which for 21 years has been presenting the Valley with modern dance ranging from the cutting edge of the avant to lyrical modern dance to contemporary ballet, will lead off the University Theatre spring productions.

The dance troupe, led by artistic director Ruth Griffin, will present six pieces of modern dance never before seen in the Central Valley with performances at 8 p.m. on Feb. 7-8 and 11-15 and 2 p.m. on Feb. 9. The concert will be performed on the John Wright stage in the Speech Arts building.

The Fresno premier of "Anton in Show Business" by Jane Martin, directed by Kathleen McKinley will be March 14-16 and 18-22. Named Best New Play of 2001 by the American Theatre Critics Association, this "raucously funny and painful" comedy brilliantly captures the magic and calamity of the American theatre industry. A seven women ensemble plays 14 roles in this insider's view of an ill-fated Texas production of Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters starring the glamorous TV diva, the queen of Off-Off-Broadway and a naive newcomer.

Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing," directed by Brad Myers, will be presented May 2-4 and 6-10. Fanciful notions, emotional intensity, love, adventure, the beauties of nature and of women all these aspects of romance are present in the classic play.

Single-show tickets are $7 for Fresno State Students, $12 for Fresno State faculty/staff, seniors, Alumni Association members and students from other schools, and $14 general admission.  For more information, call the Theatre Box Office at 8-2216.
