Planetarium program – “MarsQuest”
The latest program at the Downing Planetarium traces the history of Mars from the early observations of scientists whose imagined "canals" inspired science fiction stories about Martians, to modern observations and mission findings from Viking, Pathfinder, and Mars Global Surveyor, which have given us new insight into the climate, weather and terrain on the Red Planet. more

Campaign to reduce heavy drinking under way
A project to reduce heavy drinking and alcohol-related harm among students is under way at the university this fall, employing the “social norms” strategy. Classroom posters and other materials that are part of this campaign will be used throughout the campus. more

New Health Policy Institute wins $4 million grant
A five-year, $4 million grant from The California Endowment for the new Central Valley Health Policy Institute at Fresno State was announced in June by Robert K. Ross, M.D., president and CEO of The Endowment, and President Welty. more

Fresno State’s International Programs Office and Extended Education staff team have partnered throughout the year in assisting faculty, students and staff across campus in coordinating specially designed study abroad opportunities. New Africana & American Indian Studies Program
After 33 years of existence, the Ethnic Studies Program, housed at the College of Social Sciences, has been renamed Africana & American Indian Studies Program. more

Campus to host children’s book writers, illustrators
The Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature at Fresno State, the Arne Nixon Center Advocates (ANCA) and The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), North/Central California Region, will co-host an SCBWI regional conference Oct. 17-18, 2003. This program, to be held at Fresno State campus, is for authors, illustrators, teachers, librarians, collectors, and anyone interested in children's literature. more
