Fresno State faculty and staff gain global perspective
Fresno State’s International Programs Office and Extended
Education staff team have partnered throughout the year in assisting
faculty, students and staff across campus in coordinating specially
designed study abroad opportunities. Below is a partial list of the
Fresno State community members who are engaged in other travel/research
related activities sponsored externally or personally.
AFRICA
Dr. Richard Berrett (Family Food Sciences) and Dr. Yaw Oheneba-Sakyi
(Africana and American Indian Studies) lead a group of students from
various disciplines in a three-week Service Learning Experience in South
Africa.
ARMENIA
Bill Erysian (part-time faculty) is engaged in a Grant Project in Armenian
Agribusiness, linked with Yerevan State University. He has worked closely
with the International Programs Office in obtaining grant support from USDA.
Barlow Der Mugrdechian visited Yerevan State University and is
currently exploring a potential study abroad program for Fresno State
students.
CHILE
Dr. James Cypher (Economics) completed his spring semester 2003 appointment
as Visiting Professor at Santiago, Chile program in the University Studies
Abroad Consortium (USAC) program.
FRANCE
Dr. Dickran Kouymjian (Armenian Studies) was a guest presenter and the only
non-European participating in the "International Conference: Le reliure
Médiévale" in Paris, France. In addition, he recently
presented his paper on "Chinese Motifs in 13th century Armenian Art:
The Mongol Connection" at an International symposium organized by the
Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
INDIA
Dr. Ramakrishna Nunna (Electrical and Computer Engineering) traveled
to Hoshiapur, Punjab to assist a number of students from the Swami Sarvanand
Gir Institute who will be transferring to Fresno State as part of the
Munger Program in Computer Engineering.
ITALY
Marianne Jones, (Child Family and Consumer Sciences) spent two months
studying Italian language and culture through a program offered by the
Italian Ministry of Education in Spoleto.
JAPAN
Dr. Russell Mardon and Dr. Marn Cha (Political Science) taught a three-week
course in Tokyo, Japan, to a group of students from the Kanda Institute
of Foreign Studies and the Center for Advanced Study.
Dr. Linda Hewett (Gerontology), Dr. Franklin Ng (Anthropology) and
Dr. Shekigo Okomoto (Linguistics) have been involved throughout the
year with faculty members from eight universities across the country
focusing on internationalizing the curriculum. Site visits to Japan
and special study centers were made this summer. This project is co-sponsored
through a grant at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Marilyn Miller (Physical Therapy) is exploring and negotiating
with colleagues via e-mail a new program initiative for Japanese students
from Department of Physical Therapy at Niigata University of Health
and Welfare to come and study at Fresno State in summer 2004. In addition,
she presented a paper at a Physical Therapy Conference in Barcelona,
Spain.
KOREA
Dr. James Walton (English) and Dr. Marn Cha (Political Science) taught
a three-week course this summer at Konkuk University in Korea to Korean
students who plan to transfer to Fresno State in the future.
MEXICO
Dr. Cosme Zaragoza (Foreign Languages) lead another group of students
in Language and Culture studies to Guanajuato, Gto. Mexico. This year's
program was designed as a collaborative program between the Foreign
Languages Department and Health Science Department.
POLAND
Dana Zupanovich Lucka (Development Office-College of Engineering and Computer
Sciences) was an invited guest lecturer at the Warsaw Agricultural University
where she focused her topic on "Educational Philanthropy."
SPAIN
Dr. Beth Hartung (Sociology) lead a group of Liberal Studies students
who are part of the Teaching Fellows Program on the culture of Spain.
The group spent most of their time in Barcelona.
Three Engineering students spent the spring semester and part of the
summer at the Universidad of Navarra in Spain and were enrolled in engineering
courses. Fresno State professor Dr. Jesus Larralde-Muro assisted in
the coordination of this exchange program.
John Houseman (Development Office-College of Science and Math) was
the staff person selected to participate in the language and culture
study program in Alicante, Spain, through the University Study Abroad
Consortium (USAC).
Marilyn Miller (Physical Therapy Dept) presented a paper in June
at the World Confederation for Physiotherapy and the International
Society of Educators in Physiotherapy at the 14th Annual Conference
held in Valencia, Spain.
THAILAND
Dr. Steve Blumenshine (Biology) was selected to participate in the language
and culture study through the USAC program. In addition, he engaged
in some research studies related to his discipline with faculty at Chaingmai
University.
