Fresno State wines win at State Fair

Four Fresno State student-produced wines won medals at this year’s California State Fair Wine Competition, led by the 2001 Viognier with a gold medal.

Produced from grapes grown at the Joe Berghold vineyard in Lodi, the 2001 Viognier won the gold with a high 94 rating.

Three other medal winners at the state fair competition include a silver medal each for Fresno State’s 2001 Lodi Merlot, from grapes grown at Arbor Vineyards in Lodi; and the 2000 Syrah, from grapes grown in Fresno County. Both silver medals received a high rating within their class at 91 and 90, respectively.

Fresno State’s 2000 Barbera, grown in Stanislaus County, received a bronze medal at the competition, which was held June 25-27 in Sacramento.

This marks the fifth consecutive year that Fresno State wines have won the top medal awards at the California State Fair Wine Competition, which is the oldest and most prestigious wine judging competition in North America.
