The Kremen School of Education and Human Development and the College of Social Sciences have new leadership.

Dr. Paul L. Beare, who has 30 years of experience as an elementary school teacher, college professor and administrator, has been named dean of the Kremen School. He started his duties on July 1st, succeeding Dr. Paul Shaker, who accepted a position as Dean of Education at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia

Beare had been dean of the College of Education at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Ga. He was been active in responding to Georgia’s educational reform efforts.

A native of St. Louis, Mo., he attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and received his bachelor’s degree in sociology and his master’s degree and Ph.D. in special education focusing on children with emotional/behavioral disorders.

More on Beare.

Dr. Luz Gonzalez is the Interim Dean of the College of Social Sciences, effective July 1, 2003 through July 1, 2005. She follows Dr. Ellen Gruenbaum, who stepped down to return to teaching and research.

Gonzalez has served as Associate Dean of the college since 2001, as chair of the Department of Chicano and Latin American Studies from 1993 through 2001 and began her faculty appointment at Fresno State in 1989.

Dr. Gonzalez carried an overwhelming majority of the nominations put forward by the tenured faculty of the College of Social Sciences. She is known on campus and in the community for her dedication to students, for her major role in developing the Faculty Mentoring Program, for her participation in designing and implementing the University 1 course, and for being the major force in the current Latino Commencement celebration.
