New tailgating rules established

New tailgating rules established

In an effort to improve the overall family environment at Fresno State athletic events, the university is establishing new guidelines for tailgating at all university athletic events this year.

“The goal of the guidelines is to provide a safe and problem-free experience for fans before, during and after the game,” said Scott Johnson, Fresno State Athletic Director.

The new policy, developed by the Athletic Department, permits tailgating with alcohol only in designated parking lots in the vicinity of the stadium. Tailgating is limited to Athletic Department-controlled parking lots and grassy areas. Campus policy prohibits public consumption of alcohol in all other areas.

Tailgate party sponsors must be registered either as season parking pass holders, or they must register for a single-day tailgate on the day of the event. A registration stub or season parking pass must be displayed in the primary “tailgate” vehicle.

Registration cards will be available as fans enter the designated parking lots where alcohol can be served.

The following are not allowed at any tailgate: drinking contests, beer kegs (except by licensed caterer), charcoal grills, non-portable furniture (couches, for example). The university reserves the right to determine the appropriateness of any item or activity.

The university will now allow tailgating to begin three hours before a game, but unlike last year tailgating will not be allowed during game time. A “caretaker” may remain at the tailgate site during the game to safeguard belongings. Tailgating may resume for up to two hours after the end of a game.

During football games, the university will stop the sale of any alcoholic beverages in the stadium at the end of halftime. Rules for alcohol beverage sales during other athletic events will be announced.

Alcohol must not be sold at any tailgate in any manner, direct or indirect (as in price of admission) unless by the university concessionaire, a licensed caterer, or under a one-day ABC license approved by the Fresno State Department of Public Safety.

Additional information about new rules is available at www.FresnoStateNews.com and www.gobulldogs.com and at the Athletic Media office at 8-2509 or the University Police Department at 8-2132.

Persons who violate the rules may be asked to leave campus, may be cited by university police or may jeopardize their permission for future tailgates.
