Children's books conference Oct. 17-18
Patricia McKissack, whose books have won Coretta Scott King awards and Newbery and Caldecott Honors, will be among the featured speakers at a conference Oct. 17-18 at Fresno State.

The event is sponsored by the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children's Literature, the Arne Nixon Center Advocates and The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), North/Central California Region. more

Journal deadlines

The Journal will be published online on the first day of each month – or the weekday closest to the first – from September through May. The only exception is January, when the publication date will be Jan. 9.

The deadline for submissions to Journal is 10 days prior to the first of each month. For the November issue, the deadline is Oct. 24. Information must be sent via e-mail to journal. Phone messages, faxes or printed hard copies will not be accepted.

 

‘Culture of Peace’ Week under way
Peace advocate Arun Gandhi will highlight the weeklong “Building a Culture of Peace” activities that continue through Oct. 4 at Fresno State and Fresno Pacific University. more

CSU opposes Prop. 54
During its September 2003 meeting, the Board of Trustees of The California State University voted unanimously to oppose Proposition 54, the Classification by Race, Ethnicity, Color or National Origin initiative, which is scheduled to appear on the Oct. 7 Special Election ballot. more

Equestrian student dies
Shana Virginia Eriksson, the Fresno State student-athlete injured in a horseback riding accident, died on Sept. 27.

Miss Eriksson, 18 of Tahoe City, Calif., died at University Medical Center in Fresno where she had been in critical condition since the Sept. 24 accident on the campus farm. more

Bulldog Shop manager dies
Blaine Kelley, manager of the Bulldog Shop for the last three years, died at his home on Sept. 11. more

Keith Putirka earns international attention for volcano research
Dr. Keith Putirka, a Fresno State professor of earth and environmental sciences, is sparking a reconsideration of how volcanoes are formed.

Putirka, along with professor Christopher Condit of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, are proponents of a new theory about how magma makes its way to the surface of the earth to form volcanoes. more

Arson cause of Sept. 8 Fire at Lab School

United States District Court Judge Robert E. Coyle will be honored on Monday, Oct. 20 by his alma mater, Fresno State, where he once served as student body president. more

Houghten named Entrepreneur in Residence
Fresno State alumni Richard A. Houghten, founder and president of Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies in San Diego, will be Entrepreneur in Residence at Fresno State from Oct. 14-17. more

Bowerman is Interim Dean of Craig School
Dr. Karen Dill Bowerman, a faculty member and administrator at Fresno State for more than 20 years, has been named Interim Dean of the Craig School of Business for the 2003-2004 academic year.

She replaces Dr. Fred Evans, who accepted at position at California State University, Northridge. more

Warning on computer patches issued
Some computer users may be receiving many e-mails claiming to be from Microsoft Corp. urging them to apply a free security patch. Campus Information Systems Security said the e-mail is a fake and users should not apply any computer or security patches sent via e-mail. more

Accreditation update
California State University, Fresno is in the midst of its periodic accreditation review by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Under the new WASC procedures, the review is carried out in stages and is customized to the campus. The next step in the process is the Preparatory Review, scheduled for November 19-21, 2003. more

International Coffee Hour programs
The International Coffee Hour is held each Tuesday from 3-4 p.m. at the Education Building Atrium, room 54-58. more
