Kevin Ayotte (Communication) recently gave an invited lecture to the Communication faculty at the University of Colorado in Boulder. His paper "The Culture of Dis-ease" was presented as part of their regular colloquium series. Ayotte is a recognized scholar in the rhetoric surrounding biological weaponary and its implications to foreign policy.

Charles Degeneffe (Counseling, Special Education, and Rehabilitation) published the article, "What is Catholic About Catholic Charities?" in the July, 2003 edition of the journal, Social Work.

Barlow Der Mugrdechian (Armenian Studies) attended the First International Congress of Armenian Studies, held Sept. 15-20, in Yerevan, Armenia. Scholars and teachers of Armenian were invited from throughout the world. On Nov. 21-22, he will chair the annual membership meeting of the Society for Armenian Studies, to be held in Toronto. He also will present a paper, "Reform in Higher Education: The Case of the Faculty of Economics at Yerevan State University, Armenia" as part of a panel on "Education and Family in Post-Soviet Armenia."

Michael Gorman (Dean, Library Services) is a candidate for the 2005-2006 presidency of the American Library Association. He currently is a member of the ALA Executive Board (2003-2006) and ALA Council (2002-2005). ALA members will vote in the spring. If elected he will serve as ALA vice president/president-elect for 2004-2005 and as president the following year.

Douglas Hurt (Geography) was awarded The National Council for Geographic Education’s annual Distinguished Teaching Achievement Award at the annual meeting Oct. 8-11 in Salt Lake City. The NCGE was chartered in 1915 to promote geographic education at all levels of instruction. It has 3,200 members.

Philip Lane (Mass Communication and Journalism): "In Search of a Free Media Landscape," a review of the book Rebels on the Air: An Alternative History of Radio in America. The Review of Communication 3.1 (January 2003) online journal of the National Communication Association. He also presented the paper "Phillips H. Lord and Reality-Based Radio" at the annual joint meeting of the Popular Culture Association and the American Culture Association, New Orleans in April 2003.
