New Faderman ScholarshipThe M.F.A program in Creative Writing in conjunction with the College of Arts and Humanities has established the Lillian Faderman Scholarship in Creative Nonfiction. John Rabb, the first recipient and was honored along with other scholarship winners at the annual New Students Reading and Award Ceremony last month. The Faderman Scholar is selected from among entering students and is awarded $1,000. The M.F.A program already offers the William Saroyan Scholarship in Fiction and the Philip Levine Scholarship in Poetry, but this is the first scholarship aimed at a writer of creative nonfiction. All three awards are made on the basis of excellence and are given to student writers who show extraordinary promise for a career in literary writing. The program hopes to find sponsors to help continue the awards indefinitely. In addition to the Faderman scholarship, other scholarships and their awardees are: Jennifer Raimondo, the Saroyan Scholarship ($1000); and Michael Maniquiz, the Levine Scholarship ($1000). Winners of the Andres Montoya Creative Writing Scholarships ($500) are Marie Avelina Chan (graduate) and Marisol Teresa Baca (undergraduate). Benck Family Scholarship winners are Neelam Bains, Creative Writing ($500), Donavan Ingram, Poetry ($400); and Joseph Sabado, Poetry ($400). |
