Japan Studies Institute offers scholarships for faculty

Japan Studies Institute is an opportunity for faculty to take part in the 2004 National Faculty Development Institute on “Incorporating Japanese Studies into the Undergraduate Curriculum."

The month long program is located at San Diego State University and will be held June 2-25, 2004. The application deadline is Dec. 15.

The program is designed for full-time faculty without prior experience in Japanese studies and who wish to incorporate information about Japanese culture into the undergraduate courses they teach. Academic administrators and librarians who can impact undergraduate education are also welcome. The program is only open to faculty and administrators at AASCU member institutions.

The month-long program includes seminars, lectures, readings, films, discussion groups and cultural activities related to Japanese history, culture, literature, government, business, language and education.

The institute provides a $5,500 Sasakawa Fellowship for each participant selected. Institutions whose faculty are accepted for the fellowships pay a partial tuition of $500.

Application materials and information are available online at the Japan Studies Institure Web site.
