CSU Summer Arts

For the sixth straight summer, the College of Arts and Humanities at Fresno State will host the CSU Summer Arts Program.

Eighteen intensive, two-week, for-credit courses will be offered in July at Fresno State ; an additional course, "Drawing and Painting in Florence ," will be held June 12-26 in Italy.

Students from throughout the California State University system, as well as from other colleges and universities throughout the nation, are encouraged to apply, as are practicing teachers, arts professionals, and serious amateurs in various arts areas. Scholarships are available to those who qualify. All courses are coordinated by members of the CSU faculty and are taught by guest artists at the top of their fields.

Courses in music include: Percussion in World Music; Instrumental & Vocal Jazz; Solo Guitar Playing: Crossing Genres; and The Art of Sound Recording. There will be two dance courses: Creating the Visually Evocative Dance and Fearless Flight with Diavolo Dance Theatre.

In theater, the following workshops are available: Theatre on the Edge: Unheard Voices; Viewpoints in Action: Performance Techniques for Actors and Dancers; Jerry Mitchell & Company: A Broadway Musical Theatre Workshop; and Playwrights' Cornocopia.

For writers, offerings include: Writing the Worlds of Childhood: the Art of Writing for Children and The Experimental Narrative. For media students, there are two workshops: Creating and Animating Digital Actors and Producing the Documentary for Broadcast Television.

In the Visual Arts, offerings include: Photography and the Imagination, Printmaking as Public Art, The Figure in Glass, The Book as Visual Object: How to Create Meaningful Artist Books, and Drawing & Painting in Florence.

In addition to these courses for approximately 500 students, this internationally acclaimed residency program includes a festival in which guest artists will perform for the community throughout July in more than 40 public events.

Highlights this summer will include steel drummer Liam Teague, Jazz singer Carmen Bradford, Spider-Man animation director Anthony LaMolinara and Broadway great Jerry Mitchell.
