President's message on commitment to diversity

President Welty issued the following message on "Shared Commitment to Diversity and the Exchange of Ideas:"

As we begin a new semester I think it is important to reiterate our commitment as a University community to encourage, protect and celebrate diversity. This value places a responsibility upon everyone to value all members of the community regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, age, disability or sexual orientation.

Likewise, we will continue to work hard to protect the free and open exchange of ideas. The open exchange of ideas and beliefs is one of the most important values we hold as a University community. Debate, dialogue and discussion should be undertaken consistent with our commitment to civility.

We will not tolerate improper behavior that is directed at individuals or groups, or behavior that disrupts the open exchange of ideas. Instances of improper behavior are thoroughly investigated to determine what administrative or legal action should be taken.

Thank you for joining me to assure that we continue to uphold those values which we cherish as a University community.
