Health surveys under way
Two major health surveys are currently being conducted on campus.
Students will be contacted directly, but faculty and staff support of
student participation can improve response rates and thus improve the
validity of the findings.
Respondents to either survey will have the opportunity to win substantial
cash awards for participating. For more information about either
survey, contact Sam Gitchel, samg@csufresno.edu
or 8-6735.
The National College Health Assessment is an integral part of
the social norms alcohol safety project. It serves as both an evaluation
measure and a source of data for new social norms materials.
Previous administrations of the NCHA revealed the extent of Fresno
State misperceptions about alcohol: although most drink moderately or
not at all, most believe that their peers drink heavily, frequently,
and with a high prevalence of harm. The social norms project seeks to
correct these misperceptions.
The Harvard Study of College Health Behaviors is a continuation
and expansion of the renowned Harvard College Alcohol Surveys, which
were conducted through the 1990's and made national headlines by re-coining
the term "binge" drinking.
The new survey assesses a wider range of health behaviors. 800
Fresno State students were randomly selected and will be contacted by
postcard and e-mail to complete the web-based questionnaire.
