Bee corrects errors

Recently Dr. Welty informed the university community that he was troubled by The Fresno Bee's interpretation of the California State University audit of auxiliary organizations, which led to a story containing several errors in the Feb. 15 edition.  On Feb. 22, the Bee  issued a correction, which appeared in the Setting it Straight column at the bottom of Page A28.

In the correction, the Bee admitted several substantial errors in their coverage. The paper's correction includes:

  • "In the story and in its headline, the Bee was incorrect in its estimate of the amount of money auditors questioned."
  • "The audit did not find any money had been wasted or stolen ."
  • "A statement that the auditors found lack of resources, faulty judgments, unintended errors and 'circumvention by collusion' was not specific to Fresno State . "
  •   "Auditors did not find that athletic ticket sales could not be reconciled to   cash receipts, only that they were not reconciled."

Though we found several other inaccuracies in the story, (see the FresnoStateNews.com Audit story) we are pleased that the Bee has admitted these errors.
