Civic engagement grant

Fresno State has received a $34,000 grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service to enhance academic and civic engagement on the campus.

The award, titled “Realizing the Civic Mission of Education in the California State University: A Learn and Serve America Grant” has a two-year timeline and will support the placement of long-term programs.

The grant funds will provide training sessions to those involved with the program, an assessment of the campus’ academic culture and civic mission, development of specific activities to transform academic culture in order to more fully achieve the civic mission of education, and development of student leadership activities, said Chris Fiorentino, director of Students for Community Service.

“The result of the grant will be that we will strengthen our university's service-learning and civic engagement efforts by involving more faculty, students and community partners in high-quality service and collaboration,” he said.

The California State University Chancellor’s Office wrote the grant for the initial funds and Fresno State’s Students for Community Service office, with input from the Community Service-Learning Advisory Council, submitted a proposal as a sub-grantee.
