Limited spring applications
Despite the restoration of some enrollment funds in the new state budget, Fresno State must limit the number of applications for admission in the spring 2005 semester. It is the second consecutive spring that limits have been imposed. more

Health policy institute names director
Dr. John Capitman, a Brandeis University professor and researcher who is nationally renowned for his work in health disparities, long-term care, substance abuse and racial and ethnic disparities in cancer care, has been named executive director of the Central Valley Health Policy Institute at Fresno State. more

Top 100 listing
Eighteen California State University campuses, including Fresno State, are listed in the May issue of Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education as being among the annual "Top 100," a national list of colleges and universities that conferred the most bachelor's degrees upon Hispanics, according to the latest report by the National Center for Education Statistics. more

Huerta new police chief
David Huerta, a 31-year veteran of law enforcement entirely with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department, is the new chief of police at Fresno State, his alma mater. more

Kalfayan interim dean for Craig School
Garo Kalfayan, a Fresno State faculty member in the accountancy department for more than 17 years, has been named the Sid Craig School of Business’ interim dean for the 2004-05 academic year. more

Karabian donates papers
The Henry Madden Library has announced the donation of the legislative papers from former state Assemblyman and Fresno native Walter Karabian. The papers will be housed in the library’s Central Valley Political Archive. more

Keppler new Maddy Institute head
Mark J. Keppler, an award-winning faculty member who recently completed a highly successful term as the MBA director at Fresno State and has been the driving force behind the Clovis Community Foundation, the Association for the Beautification of Route 99 and the Coalition for Community Trails, was named executive director of the Kenneth L. Maddy Institute for Public Affairs by President Welty effective June 1. more

Professor to serve in Mexico
Dr. Jesus Martinez-Saldana, a Chicano Studies professor, was named a candidate for a position in the Michoacan, Mexico state legislature as the first ever representative in the local congress for that state’s Mexican migrants living abroad. more

Faculty tenure, promotion
Twenty-one faculty members at Fresno State have earned tenure and/or promotions, effective Aug. 17, 2004, Provost Jeronima Echeverria announced. more

West Nile Virus precautions
The following campus advisory was issued by the university: West Nile Virus, which can cause disease in humans, has been identified in a dead bird in Bakersfield and in mosquitoes in Arvin. This means the virus, which also has the potential to infect horses, is likely on its way to Fresno. Since the campus has a large population of birds, a few points of information should be shared with the campus community. more

WASC update
The accreditation self-study on the educational effectiveness of programs at California State University, Fresno was completed in July 2004.   This report will be a basis of the external review by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in mid-October, when a site visit team arrives on campus to conduct an evaluation of the institutional commitment to educational effectiveness as a follow up to its earlier review of the university’s institutional capacity to be educationally effective. more

Samiian named interim dean
Dr. Vida Samiian, former associate dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, was named interim dean effective July 28 by Provost Jeri Echeverria. more

Top 10 ranking
The Save Mart Center at Fresno State was ranked 10 th during the summer on the POLLSTAR Magazine semi-annual list of the busiest arenas in the world. more

University Communications office
The Office of University Relations at California State University, Fresno has been reorganized to better serve the strategic communications needs of the campus. To reflect the changes within the University Relations program, the office has been renamed “The Office of University Communications.” more

Dooley, Whiteside to be honored
Congressman Cal Dooley of Fresno is this year’s recipient of the Rose Ann Vuich Ethical Leadership Award, the Kenneth L. Maddy Institute announced. A luncheon honoring Dooley will be held on Thursday, Sept. 16. more

Chancellor’s review of President Welty
CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed issued this open letter to the Fresno State Community on July 14, 2004:
During the spring 2004 term a six-year review of Dr. John Welty, President of California State University, Fresno (Fresno State) was initiated.   The review took the form of collecting and summarizing letters from a selection of the campus community, both internal and external, and bringing a four-person team to the campus in the spring term 2004. more

Boswell Chair named
Dr. Bruce A. Roberts, county director and agronomy farm adviser for UC Cooperative Extension in Kings County, is first holder of the J.G. Boswell Endowed Chair in Plant Science at Fresno State. more

Hmong Welcome Sept. 7
As part of a community-wide effort to welcome and assist an estimated 3,000 new Hmong refugees to the Central Valley, Fresno State will hold a special forum Tuesday, Sept. 7. more
