University Communications office

The Office of University Relations at California State University, Fresno has been reorganized to better serve the strategic communications needs of the campus. To reflect the changes within the University Relations program, the office has been renamed “The Office of University Communications.”  The office is responsible to coordinate all university communications, advocacy and public policy initiatives across the campus. Overall, the office works to present an accurate and substantive view of the university to a wide variety of constituents to advance the University’s goals. Mark Aydelotte, Associate Vice President, oversees the Office of University Communications.

The reorganization is based on the following major changes occurring on campus:

  • A rapidly-increasing shift from printed to electronic communications;
  • The development of a multimillion-dollar comprehensive fund-raising campaign for the campus, and the attendant strategic communications needs of the campaign;
  • The incorporation of communications planning in the overall planning for campus administrative and academic development to help ensure the success of critical projects; and
  • The growing need for coordination of all aspects of communication and marketing across the campus to ensure accurate, timely and consistent messages.

Fresno State ’s Office of University Communications is organized into five sub-units as follows:

News and Media Relations, directed by Shirley Melikian Armbruster. This unit provides information designed to advance university goals.  Staff members now provide support to specific campus areas:

Shirley’s responsibilities: Assignment of news stories, Academic Affairs, Administrative Services, Craig School of Business, editorial direction of Fresno State Magazine, College of Health and Human Services, College of Arts and Humanities, Library, Maddy Institute, Save Mart Center, College of Science and Mathematics, and University Journal

Public information specialist Tom Uribes’ responsibilities: College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Association, (Bookstore, Food Services, USU), general athletics news in coordination with Athletic Media, commencement, Kremen School of Education, College of  Engineering and Computer Science, Housing, Information Technology, College of Social Sciences, Student Services, and Vintage Days.

In addition, the office frequently uses mass communication and journalism interns to provide additional support to specific projects and programs of the campus.

Government Relations and Public Affairs

Regional, state and federal legislative relations for the campus, and the University Ambassadors for Higher Education organization, are being handled by Mark Aydelotte, the AVP for University Communications

Publications and New Media, directed by Bruce Whitworth

This unit handles campus publishing and design, Web and new media, promotional photography, the university catalog, the phone directory, publication and Web design and content standards, and production of Fresno State Magazine.

Web manager Enoch Gamoian provides academic Web support, maintains FresnoStateNews.com, provides liaison with campus Web groups, and oversees the University Web site and Web site policies. April Schulthies , produces the catalog and the catalog on CD. Design services for campus communications are provided by senior graphic designer Priscilla Helling and designer Joseph Rachel.  Juan Lucero assists with Web site design and maintenance.

Institutional and Development Communications

Development communications for the campus is currently being handled by Mark Aydelotte.  An additional dedicated staff person will soon be added to support the expanded efforts of the comprehensive fund-raising campaign. This unit handles development of the campaign case statement, campaign communications and publications, communications for the National Board of Visitors, the Volunteer Manual, and writing support for development directors.

Administrative and Creative Services

Esther Gonzalez is responsible to manage support services for University Communications, including accounting and budget, human resources and event assistance. Angel Langridge maintains communications databases, contact and mailing lists, the experts list, media archives, and the online telephone directory. Margarita Adona, serves as the campus telephone operator.

The new Office of University Communications will support the University's academic mission by upholding campus efforts designed to encourage public, donor, community and government support of Fresno State.
