Back to SportsIt’s back to campus and back to sports at Fresno State. Here is a compilation of a variety of names, dates and information to start the year in Athletics. Quick Fun FactIn the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, Fresno State and Hawai'i have the most United States representatives (3) than any other WAC member. SMU (15) and UTEP (11) have the largest pool of Olympians but each one represents a foreign country. Quarterback Luncheons2004 Fresno State Football Quarterback Luncheon Dates have been set. All meetings will take place twice a month on Thursdays at Pardini's Restaurant (2257 West Shaw Avenue). For more details, call (559) 278-7801. NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament NewsFor the first time in school history, Fresno State has been selected to host the 2004-05 first and second round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship games, March 19 and 21, at the Save Mart Center. The 2004-05 season marks the first time that the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship will mirror the men's format with eight predetermined first and second round sites and regionals. There will be eight teams competing in Fresno and all six games will be broadcast live on ESPN or ESPN2. The other first-round host institutions include Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas/Texas Tech (played in Dallas) and Washington. Fresno State to Host Other NCAA ChampionshipsIn addition to hosting the first and second rounds of the 2004-05 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament, Fresno State also will host the NCAA Western Regionals for Cross Country on Nov. 13 and the NCAA Western Regionals for Wrestling on March 5. Athletics Department Unveils New Mission StatementAs part of the upcoming strategic plan for athletics, the department has adopted a new mission statement that will be displayed prominently throughout the year: “Fresno State Athletics is committed to developing champions for life by inspiring academic and athletic excellence in an environment that promotes diversity, equity and integrity while providing competitive opportunities for today's student-athletes to become tomorrow's leaders. Pride • Success • Integrity • Commitment.” Did You Know?In 2003, the football team finished 34th nationally in percent of capacity filled at home games (94.08) as the Bulldogs averaged 38,603. In 2003 the women's soccer team averaged 1,607 fans per game to rank No. 3 in the nation and was tops on the West Coast. In 2003, the women's volleyball team finished 30th in the nation in average attendance (1,031) and was second in the WAC behind perennial national attendance leader Hawai'i. In 2003-04, the women's basketball team finished 19th in average (4,495) and 22nd in total (62,933) attendance. In 2003-04, the men's basketball team finished 19th in average attendance (13,686) -- a significant accomplishment as the Bulldogs showed the second largest improvement overall in the nation. In 2004, the softball team led the nation in both average and total attendance for the 10th time since the NCAA starting keeping official count in1991. Over the years, the Bulldogs have led the country in average attendance in 17 of the last 19 years while being tops in total attendance 15 times. For the RecordFresno State student-athletes earned a record 2.91 cumulative grade point average this past academic year -- the highest mark in eight years. For the seventh straight year, the Bulldogs have earned a GPA that is higher than the rest of the campus and 10 teams posted a 3.00 cumulative GPA or better. What's NewThe Fresno State's athletics web site has added two new links to assist incoming student-athletes and supporters. These links are provided to give you an understanding of processes and procedures at it relates to the university as well as the NCAA. Special DealsWith the 2004 Fresno State football season around the corner, faculty/staff and students can take advantage of special offers this fall. A football season ticket package for faculty/staff is $120 while students can purchase one for $50. In addition, students can purchase one guest season ticket package for $75. Outside of football, students can enter all other Bulldog athletic venues free of charge with a valid student ID. |
