Journalism symposium Oct. 1

The Roger Tatarian Journalism Symposium, “Campaign Conversation,” will conclude Oct. 1 with a panel discussion and a speech by Hearst Newspapers columnist Helen Thomas.

The panel will be moderated by Jim Tucker, Fresno State journalism professor and host of “Valley Press” on KVPT Ch. 18. The panel of journalists and campaign strategists will discuss “A Campaign Assessment" at 9 a.m. in the Satellite Student Union.

At 10:45 a.m., Thomas will present   "A View from Washington." Thomas, o ften described as “The First Lady of the Press” Thomas will offer analyses about the presidential campaign during the second day of the forum that begins with a panel on political communication on Thursday, Sept. 30.

The free events are sponsored by the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, the College of Arts and Humanities, the Central California Public Relations Society of America chapter and the Roger Tatarian Endowment for Journalism at Fresno State.

The endowment honors the late Fresno State journalism professor, Roger Tatarian, who was once editor-in-chief of the United Press International news service where he worked with Thomas.

A member of the Washington Press Corps, Thomas served as White House correspondent for UPI for 57 years. She is considered a trailblazer, breaking through barriers for women reporters while covering every President since John F. Kennedy.
