University engagement efforts gain noticeSeveral of California State University, Fresno’s efforts to work with and meet the needs of the surrounding community are featured in a new Web site on exemplary practices on civic and community engagement. Campus Compact’s “Indicators of Engagement Project” started in 2002, when Campus Compact received a three-year grant from the Carnegie Corporation The purpose of the project was to document and disseminate best practices of civic engagement and to help campuses achieve broader institutionalization of civic and community engagement by providing high quality exemplars. One component of the Indicators of Engagement Project featured model programs at minority-serving institutions. This database of exemplary practices contains information on 13 indicators of engagement, which was collected by surveying minority-serving institutions in the fall of 2003. The 13 indicators were: • Mission and Purpose • Academic and Administrative Leadership • Disciplines, Departments, and Interdisciplinary work • Teaching and Learning • Faculty Development • Faculty Roles and Rewards • Support Structures and Resources • Internal Budget & Resource Allocations • Community Voice • External Resource Allocation • Coordination of Community-Based Activities • Forums for Fostering Public Dialogue • Student Voice To see the information on Fresno State’s exemplary practices, visit http://www.compact.org/indicators/MSI_models_school.php?id=75.
