Faculty deaths
Professor Emeritus Dr. Ara HairabedianProfessor Emeritus of Physical Education and Human Performance Dr. Ara Hairabedian died at age 77, Sept. 8, in Fresno. He was a champion athlete, honored coach and educator and a passionate defender of Fresno State aquatics. Dr. William CoeRetired faculty member Dr. William C. Coe passed away on Sept. 10, 2004. Dr. Coe joined the psychology department faculty in 1966 and served as department chairman from 1980-1984. Professor Coe retired from the university in 1998. Dr. Coe distinguished himself as a researcher and mentor throughout his career at Fresno State and was awarded the Professor of the Year in 1988, which was the highest honor given to a professor at the university at that time. He published scores of articles in professional journals throughout his career and was nationally and internationally recognized for his work in hypnosis. Dr. Coe also published several books, including a textbook on the psychology of adjustment and scholarly works on the psychology of hypnosis. He served as president of the Psychological Hypnosis division of the American Psychological Association and was honored for his service to this national organization by being awarded “Fellow” status. He was also honored with the same designation from the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, the primary research organization in his area of research interest. The Department Of Psychology gives an annual Outstanding Thesis award in his name to commemorate his contribution to the faculty and students of the Department of Psychology. A celebration of Dr. Coe’s life was held at Copper River Country Club on Sept. 23. The family has requested that donations be sent to any local S.P.C.A or to the Fresno S.P.C.A. Animal Shelter, 103 Hughes, Fresno, CA 93706, in lieu of flowers. Professor Emeritus Dr. Kelly Jarvis BlackDr. Kelly Jarvis Black, 69, professor emeritus of the Fresno State Sid Craig School of Business, died Sept. 19. Dr. Black came to Fresno State in 1978 as interim dean. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was devoted to the Boy Scouts of America as well as local and national conservation efforts. A graveside service was held on Sept. 25. The family has requests that donations be made in Dr. Black’s name to the Boy Scouts of America, 6005 N. Tamera, Fresno, CA 93711; the L.D.S. Perpetual Education Fund, 10358 N. Rowell Ave., Fresno, CA 93720; or the San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust, Inc., 1550 E. Shaw Ave., Suite 114, Fresno, CA 93710-8009. |
