Francine Oputa honored

Women’s Resource Center coordinator Francine Oputa was honored in November as one of “24 Women of Influence” in 2004 by KSEE-TV 24.

Here’s what KSEE wrote about Oputa:

“When Francine Oputa sees a need, her faith compels her to act in love. She credits a Bible verse learned as a child for teaching her that to whom much is given, much is required – a lesson that launched her into a career dedicated to helping women and minorities. Beginning with a job in social services and moving into education, women’s issues and her current role as coordinator of the Women’s Resource Center at Fresno State, Francine has indeed given much to those she seeks to help.

“At the Women’s Resource Center, she oversees peer crisis counseling, support groups and special events focused on women’s issues. She’s also held leadership roles with countless groups such as the National Coalition Building Institute, the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Workgroup, and the Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute.

“Active in the Family Community Church of Fresno, Francine also works with The Way Ministries…John 14:16, a ministry founded by her husband that reaches African-American and Latino youths.

“She also is pursuing a doctorate degree in educational leadership.”

Asked “What motivates you?” Oputa said: “I have faith and hope in people, yet I recognize that many people have been hurt and injustice is a way of life for many. I believe it’s my responsibility to reach out and lift others up.”
