Service learning in a community health science classA research study with students enrolled in Health Science 100 (Community Health) during the fall 2004 semester was undertaken in an attempt to evaluate the impact of using a service-learning methodology in the training of students. This was the first attempt to offer this course with a 13 footnote (service learning). The purpose of the study was to identify the knowledge levels, attitudes and skills of students in HS 100 as a result of their service learning experience. Students were asked to complete a survey (with items measuring knowledge, attitudes and skills) at the beginning and at the end of the semester. Students were also asked through open-ended questions, the opportunities and challenges they faced in their service-learning experience. A focus group was also conducted with representatives from the participating organizations to identify their experiences in this service learning endeavor. Approval from the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects was granted prior to collection of data. The results of this study indicated that service learning methodologies improved students' knowledge, attitudes and skills regarding community health. Although a statistical significant difference was documented only for skill development, the qualitative results suggested improvement in knowledge levels and positive attitudes towards community participation. Most students and representatives from participating agencies indicated their satisfaction with this experience. Suggestions for future improvement included to involve students in the planning process and design mechanisms to ensure maximum efficacy of the planned activities.
