New database at library

As of January 2005, the Madden Library is providing campus access to CAB Direct, an online database produced by the Commonwealth Agricultural Bureau. With over 4 million items dating back to 1973, this database is the world’s premier collection of research in agriculture and related fields.

CAB Direct will be of strong interest to faculty and students in the fields of agriculture, food science, nutrition, agricultural economics, rural development, and recreation and tourism. Specific subjects covered by CAB Direct are as follows:

 Subject Overview:

  • Plant science (including horticulture) - 20%

  • Animal science (including nutrition & zoology) - 18%

  • Human health and hygiene (including human nutrition) - 10%

  • Pathogen, pest, parasite, and weed management - 9%

  • Natural resources and ecology - 6%

  • Forestry, forest product, and agro-forestry - 5%

  • Soil science - 5%

  • Rural development, tourism and economics - 5%

  • Food science and food products - 5%

  • Biotechnology - 2%

  • Agricultural engineering - 2%

  • Other - 13%

Like all databases provided by the Madden Library, this database is available for use by all faculty, staff, and students. Access is provided through the Madden Library “Article Indexes, Periodicals, and Databases” Web page (www.lib.csufresno.edu/resources/periodicals/). CAB Direct is listed on the alphabetical list of databases and under the subject areas of “Agriculture; Food Science and Nutrition; Recreation and Leisure Studies; and Viticulture and Enology.”

On Thursday, Feb. 17, at 9 a.m., David Celano of the Commonwealth Agricultural Bureau Publishing Division will be on campus to provide a demonstration of the database and search tips for getting the most out of your research. Those interested may attend the session room 1045 (first floor, north) of the Henry Madden Library.

Contact Dave Tyckoson at 8-5678 or davety@csufresno.edu for more information.
