TII update

Work in the Telecommunications Infrastructure Initiative (TII) pilot building, Family Food Science, is nearing completion. The construction of the Building Distribution Frame (BDF) – or wiring closet – on the second floor is now in progress.

The cables that run from faceplates through conduit throughout the building all converge in this room where they will ultimately connect to new electronic switches and routers. The BDF requires its own air conditioning system to maintain the necessary temperature for all of this electronic equipment to function properly. It is anticipated that the installation of the new air conditioning system and the pulling of the interior cabling will be complete in early April.

Once the work in Family Food Science is completed and all inspections are done and systems are tested, the TII work in other buildings on campus will move ahead aggressively. Many buildings may have TII work going on at any one time.

Investigative work is currently going on in the following buildings in preparation for the TII work soon to begin: Industrial Technology, Music East and West, Conley Art, Joyal Administration, Agricultural Classroom, Agricultural Science, Peters Business, Planetarium, Science. Some limited work has already begun in Kremen Education, and TII work is being incorporated into the current renovations of Psychology Human Services and the Lab School.

Despite the wet weather continuing through March, the outside plant work is on schedule. Approximately 6,500 feet of trenching and ductbank installation has been completed between the vaults and the trenches closed. This work is approximately 65 percent complete.

During the spring break, work resumed along Barstow in an attempt to finish this area while there was less traffic on campus.  The work being done was the final tie-ins to the utility vaults that were installed during the winter break.

Almost invisible has been the boring under Cedar Avenue at Barstow to connect the main campus with the athletic facilities around Bulldog Stadium. This boring is now complete and connection from this trench to the utility vaults on each side of Cedar will be done in the first week of April.

The construction path during March was focused around Bulldog Stadium.  The trenching and ductbank is completed on the east side of Bulldog Stadium and is 90 percent complete on the west side. Post TII work around the Madden Library is also in progress with the restoration of sidewalks, lawns and other areas disturbed by the TII trenching in that area.
