Department of Communication faculty
Several Department of Communication faculty and students attended the annual Western States Communication Association conference in San Francisco, Feb. 19-22. Two faculty presented “Top Four” papers. Kevin Ayotte's paper entitled "Framing the Threat of Mass Destruction: A Rhetorical Approach to Critical Security Studies" was a Top Four paper in Rhetoric and Public Address. Robert Powell's (with Timothy Downs) paper entitled "Another Look at Immediacy: Criticisms, Connections and Considerations" was a Top Four paper in Communication and Instruction. Sally Tannenbaum’s (with Richard Berrett) paper entitled, "Impact of Service Learning on Student Perceptions of Academic and Social Relevance in College Courses" was a competitively selected paper in Communication and Instruction. Two graduate students presented competitively selected papers: Daniel Bernard presented "The Loss of the Third World War(s): American Exceptionalism and the Need to Reconstruct the Narrative of American Intervention;" and Adam Perry presented, "Anti-Flag and NOFX: The Punk Scene as Collective Rhetoric."
