Civil War submarine exhibit A replica of the first Civil War era submarine, the H.L. Hunley, will be exhibited in the campus submarine memorial area near the Joyal Administration Building on May 10. The original Hunley submarine was used as part of the Confederate Navy’s defense plan to protect Charleston. The Hunley sunk twice in training exercises before its final historic mission. The Housatonic, one of the North’s strongest ships that housed the most powerful cannon of it’s time, was the Hunley’s main target. In this historic mission the Hunley itself sank after a fatal blow to the Housatonic. Both vessels sank. The cause of the damage to the Hunley and the location of the submarine that entombed nine crew members remained a mystery until it was found in 1995 by author and adventurer Clive Cussler. Since the retrieved Hunley was revealed in 2000, the Friends of the Hunley are working to reveal the mystery of the crew and the cause of the sinking. |
