Jazz Replay: Brian Hamada of the jazz quintet "bug"

Fresno based drummer Brian Hamada, a member of the contemporary jazz quintet "bug," joins us in-studio to talk about the release of their new CD "The Gadlfy" on Seattle's Origin Records. The group has several Fresno connections, including Hamada, and former Fresno State jazz band director and pianist James Miley. "bug" also features saxophonist Peter Epstein, guitarist Jeff Miley and bassist Roger Shew. We'll learn more about the origins of the group, the process of recording this CD (their second), and much more.

Jazz Replay: Ted Nash of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra

Saxophonist Ted Nash has traveled the world several times over as a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra since 1998. Led by Wynton Marsalis, the prestigious big band comes to the San Joaquin Valley for a performance at the Turlock Community Theatre on Thursday September 24th at 7:30 PM. We recently spoke with Ted from Banff, Alberta, where he is performing with the JALCO. We'll find out what's it's like working for Wynton Marsalis, and playing in one of the most well known jazz groups in the world. We'll also learn more about Ted's most recent solo CD "The Mancini Project."

Jazz Replay: Les Nunes of the Fresno Urban Jazz Experience
On Wednesday July 29th, 2009 Les Nunes, local jazz trombonist and leader of the group the Fresno Urban Jazz Experience joined us live in-studio to talk about his new group. The band just got back from a European tour, which had them playing in a number of prestigious German jazz venues, as well as a featured spot at the WDR Musik Fest 09 in Munster (Fresno's sister city). The band fuses jazz, funk, latin, reggae and even hip-hop influences into a unique sound that represents the diversity of the Valley. It features Les Nunes (trombone); Gene Doi (saxophone); Nathan Johnson (trumpet); Ron DeLarm (guitar); Marco Tulio Rodriguez (keyboards); Adan Infante (bass); George Ramirez (drums); and Aaron Wall (percussion/mc).

Night Lights presents jazz, from 1950 to the present, and is hosted by David Brent Johnson. "Night Lights is a program of jazz in sound, story and song," says Johnson. "I try to make each show a cultural narrative about whatever artist or theme I'm highlighting." Night Lights is produced by our friends at WFIU Public Radio at Indiana University in Bloomington, and airs on stations throughout the nation.

KFSR Jazz DJ: Roger Gonzales - "Jazz Blues and More"
Fridays 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Start your weekend off right, every Friday from 4:00 PM till 6:00 PM with Jazz, Blues and More. Each week Roger Gonzales plays an eclectic mix of music ranging from Paul DeLay to The Swan Silvertones, from Kurt Elling to the Buena Vista Social Club and much more. Roger's passion for music goes far beyond his work on 90.7 KFSR. In fact, Roger is one the Valley's top harmonica players, and is well versed in both jazz and blues. Roger's music career began when he picked up a harmonica at the tender age of 37. After six months in the music school of hard knocks, Roger sought a mentor. He was fortunate to find harmonica master Eddie Gordon as his mentor and continues to be under his tutelage. Returning to college in his forties, Roger has since completed his Bachelor's and Master’s degrees in Music Education at CSUF.

KFSR Jazz DJ: Jeff Parker - "Jazz Joint Jump"
Tuesdays 4pm-6pm
Join Jeff Parker for the swinging sounds of jazz, from the big band era to today - every Tuesday afternoon from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM on 90.7 KFSR. Jazz Joint Jump includes music from the masters of jazz in the 1930s and 1940s and follows many of the great Swing Era soloists and bandleaders throughout their careers. Attention is also given to the mainstream jazz instrumentalists and vocalists of the 1950s and 1960s swinging the songs of the great songwriters of Tin Pan Alley. You'll also hear a number of modern day jazz musicians and soloists on the play list. From Duke Ellington to Diana Krall, Jazz Joint Jump runs the full gamut of jazz that swings.

Woody Miller, longtime Valley radio pioneer, educator and jazz fan, is the now on 90.7 KFSR KFSR's Morning Jazz, Fridays from 9:00 AM till 12:00 PM. Woody was instrumental in bringing the sounds of jazz and soul to the airwaves of the Valley in the 1950's, 60's and 70's on his Fowler based station KLIP AM. Now you can hear Woody play Duke, Lady Day, Sassy, Diz and more, every Friday morning from 9:00 AM till 12:00 PM, on 90.7 KFSR's Morning Jazz.
