Fresno based drummer Brian Hamada, a member of the contemporary jazz quintet "bug," joins us in-studio to talk about the release of their new CD "The Gadlfy" on Seattle's Origin Records. The group has several Fresno connections, including Hamada, and former Fresno State jazz band director and pianist James Miley. "bug" also features saxophonist Peter Epstein, guitarist Jeff Miley and bassist Roger Shew. Saxophonist Ted Nash has traveled the world several times over as a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra since 1998. Led by Wynton Marsalis, the prestigious big band comes to the San Joaquin Valley for a performance at the Turlock Community Theatre on Thursday September 24th at 7:30 PM. We recently spoke with Ted from Banff, Alberta, where he is performing with the JALCO. We'll find out what's it's like working for Wynton Marsalis, and playing in one of the most well known jazz groups in the world. On Wednesday July 29th, 2009 Les Nunes, local jazz trombonist and leader of the group the Fresno Urban Jazz Experience joined us live in-studio to talk about his new group. The band just got back from a European tour, which had them playing in a number of prestigious German jazz venues, as well as a featured spot at the WDR Musik Fest 09 in Munster (Fresno's sister city). The band fuses jazz, funk, latin, reggae and even hip-hop influences into a unique sound that represents the diversity of the Valley. It features Les Nunes (trombone); Gene Doi (saxophone); Nathan Johnson (trumpet); Ron DeLarm (guitar); Marco Tulio Rodriguez (keyboards); Adan Infante (bass); George Ramirez (drums); and Aaron Wall (percussion/mc). Each week Roger Gonzales plays an eclectic mix of music ranging from Paul DeLay to The Swan Silvertones, from Kurt Elling to the Buena Vista Social Club and much more. Roger's passion for music goes far beyond his work on 90.7 KFSR. In fact, Roger is one the Valley's top harmonica players, and is well versed in both jazz and blues. Roger's music career began when he picked up a harmonica at the tender age of 37. After six months in the music school of hard knocks, Roger sought a mentor. He was fortunate to find harmonica master Eddie Gordon as his mentor and continues to be under his tutelage.
