The RMC Pacific division of Cemex Corporation recently bought the mountain, and has proposed to build a hard rock aggregate mining operation on the mountain. This "strip mine" would drastically alter the landscape of the region, and poses a number of potential environmental problems, from air and water quality, native plants and wildlife, and the destruction of sacred burial and worship sites of the traditional Choinumni people. In this program we talk with Audrey Osborne, a tribal leader, to learn more about the cultural significance of Wahallich, and to Jim Van Haun, of the group Friends of Jesse Morrow Mountain, who tells us about the project, and what local residents are doing to voice their opposition to the project. Love was a US Army quartermaster who helped track down and kill one of the most famous or notorious men in California in the 19th century, the legendary Joaquin Murietta. We'll ask him about this most recent book, and about his other works about California Native American tribes, and bandits and stagecoach robbers that frequented the Valley over a century ago. We'll also talk with the founders of F.L.Y.P., a new networking organization for young creative professionals in the Valley. First, we talk with Don Simmons, Director of a new organization called ReadFresno, a city and countywide program bringing volunteers to area classrooms to read to first through third grade students at six school in the Fresno Unified School District. ReadFresno also has a book donation program, which gives young students books to take home and read with their families. Thus far the program has had great results and is expanding this fall, with the goal of bringing every student to grade level in reading by the end of third grade. Later in the program we'll hear from Kate Wippern, music program coordinator for Fresno Unified, who will tell us about the much anticipated return of music programs to FUSD elementary schools starting this fall semester. Podcasts Sat, 23 Jul 2005 15:30:00 -0700 no 29:54 Fresno, San Joaquin Valley, Central Valley, California, KFSR http://www.csufresno.edu/kfsr/audio/mp3/SJS004.mp3 Earlier this year, the Discovery Center, a local non-profit science education center in Fresno, became embroiled in a dispute with the City of Fresno, over an insurance settlement paid following a fire that gutted the venerable Valley institution in May of 2000. The Center is located on land owned by the city, and has a long term lease for the use of the property. The Discovery Center used the money from the insurance settlement to purchase land and several buildings across the street from the existing building, to serve as the new home of the facility. In March of 2005, the City of Fresno began to question the use of the insurance settlement, and claims that the City should have received $144,000 of the settlement. Supporters of the Discovery Center claim that if the City goes through with a plan to recoup the insurance money from the organization, the Discovery Center would be in jeopardy of closing.
