Campus and Community
Launched in late 2002, Campus and Community is a locally produced public affairs program featuring in-depth interviews with prominent individuals from both Fresno State and the greater San Joaquin Valley. Topics range from discussion of serious issues with community leaders, to profiles of individuals and organizations doing interesting and innovative things in the arts, sciences and humanities. Unlike traditional radio and television newscasts or interviews, Campus and Community doesn't rely on short soundbites. Instead, Campus and Community gives listeners valuable insights on significant issues directly from the people themselves, in their own words. In the summer of 2005, Campus and Community gained a new name, and the program is now called San Joaquin Spotlight. The new name better represents the diverse collection of guests and topics featured on the program. Many previously broadcast editions of Campus and Community are archived on this page via Real Audio.

Support for arts coverage on Campus and Community comes from the Community Enrichment Program, administered by the Fresno Arts Council. More information about the Fresno Arts Council is available by calling 237-9734 or visiting the Arts Council online at www.fresnoarts.org.

Jesse Morrow Mountain, also known as Wahallich, to the traditional Choinumni people of eastern Fresno County, sits in a near pristine setting along Highway 180, near the entrance to Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks. The RMC Pacific division of Cemex Corporation recently bought the mountain, and has proposed to build a hard rock aggregate mining operation on the mountain. This "strip mine" would drastically alter the landscape of the region, and poses a number of potential environmental problems, from air and water quality, native plants and wildlife, and the destruction of sacred burial and worship sites of the traditional Choinumni people. In this program we talk with Audrey Osborne, a tribal leader, to learn more about the cultural significance of Wahallich, and to Jim Van Haun, of the group Friends of Jesse Morrow Mountain, who tells us about the project, and what local residents are doing to voice their opposition to the project.
