Don & Steve's BIG Fresno Barn Dance: Sundays - 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Friends and neighbors, step into the big barn for two hours of great music, Sundays from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM, right after A Prairie Home Companion on 90.7 KFSR.
Following Fresno's longtime tradition of being the west-coast capitol of western swing music, your pals, Don and
Steve spin a unique musical mix that explores western swing, its roots and its lineage. The Big Fresno Barn Dance fills the airwaves with an eclectic blend of Texas, western, honky-tonk, old-time country, rockabilly, progressive country, Americana and other astounding surprises. There's never a dull moment.
At the barn, Bob Wills is still the King, along with Spade Cooley, Merle Haggard, The Maddox Brothers and Sister Rose, Cornell Hurd, Adolf Hofner, Graham Parsons, Patsy Cline, Commander Cody, Poco, and a thousand others. The rafters start knockin' when the barn starts rockin!
Hosts Don Fischer and Steve Barile are the musical and comedic masterminds behind the barn doors of the National Big Fresno Barn Dance. Every Sunday they transform the 90.7 KFSR studios into a western oasis, complete with hay bales, barnyard animals and plenty of great western swing and authentic country sounds. First broadcast over 25 years ago, the program is an authentic piece of Fresno history, and a reference to days of the 1940's and 1950's when Fresno was home to Bob Wills, and venues like the original Fresno Barn. Don and Steve began the program on the airwaves of KFSR back in the 1980's, and after traveling to several other radio stations over the years, are now back on 90.7 every Sunday from 2:00 PM till 4:00 PM. Dan Hicks first rose to prominence in the mid 1960's as drummer for the influential San Francisco rock band The Charlatans. He eventually left the band, forming his own group "Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks," developing his own unique blend of swing, jazz, folk and country. He performs (with the new version of the Hot Licks) in Fresno at the Tower Theatre on Friday October 2nd. Recently, Dan talked to Don and Steve of the National Big Fresno Barn Dance, about his new CD Tangled Tales" and his amazing career. "So few truly original figures exist in pop music that Dan Hicks should be a national treasure." - The San Francisco Chronicle
The National Big Fresno Barn Dance's Steve Barile had a chance to talk with Whit Smith of the Hot Club of Cowtown, one of top western swing bands around today.
