A Prairie Home Companion 30th Anniversary DVD

your gift with a $100 membership donation

Every Saturday, just before 5 p.m., the crowd in the Fitzgerald Theater settles down and the ON AIR light flashes red and "A Prairie Home Companion" goes out live coast-to-coast on the radio airwaves into the homes and cares of its countless fans, most of whom have never laid eyes on the show. Now, thanks to an innovation called "Video," they can. The disc in this box contains not only audio but also Full-Color Moving Images of a live performance of the radio show, including the signature "News from Lake Wobegon" monologue, a Guy Noir Private Eye thriller, a western episode with Dusty and Lefty, and much more. Guest artists include gospel star Jearlyn Steele, jazz sweetheart Inga Swearingen, killer country band BR549, the distinguished Guy’s All Star Shoe Band with piano wizard Richard Dworsky, plus the timeless Tim Russell, insouciant Sue Scott, and sound-effects genii Tom Keith and Fred Newman, and the man with the red socks, Garrison Keillor.

A Prairie Home Companion - The Movie (dir. Robert Altman)

your gift with a $150 membership donation

A star studded Hollywood adaptation of Garrison Keillor's famous radio show, this motion picture was also director Robert Altman's final film. The movie takes place during the fictional last live performance of the show as new owners have sent an axeman (Tommy Lee Jones) to close the show. Another fantasy element is thrown in as an angel (Virginia Madsen) stalks the theater to take one of the performers. Keillor essentially plays himself, even using his own name for the character. Lily Tomlin and Meryl Streep play the singing Johnson Sisters, with Lindsay Lohan as a suicide-obsessed daughter of Streep. Woody Harrelson and John C. Reilly are hilarious as the slightly off-color singing cowboy duo, Dusty & Lefty. Kevin Kline stars as security guard Guy Noir, and Maya Rudolph also appears as a pregnant stage coordinator. (PG-13)

Big 'ol Box of New Orleans - 4CDs

your gift with a $500 membership donation

This four CD set, titled Doctors, Professors, Kings and Queens: The Big Ol' Box of New Orleans set takes the music of the Big Easy and puts it in the context of that vibrant city in a way that has never been done before. It features more than 80 hits, old and new, by such artists as Dr. John, Professor Longhair, Louis Armstrong, The Meters, Fats Domino, Buckwheat Zydeco and many others. The result is a spicy gumbo containing all of New Orleans' musical styles and flavors: jazz and blues, Cajun and Zydeco, R&B and funk. Also included is a gorgeous 84-page book that features essays and sidebars that completely explode the idea of what liner notes can be. Writer Mary Herczog takes you by the hand through the narrow streets of the Quarter, through the Garden District and up through Bayou St. John-imparting the history alongside the colorful legends, while giving an insider's-eye view of the city's great (and notorious) bars and restaurants; and boxed set producer Chuck Taggart shares his deep knowledge of New Orleans music in his richly detailed track-by-track commentary.

available with a $500 membership donation

More than any other improvising artist during the past 45 years, the pianist / composer/ bandleader Dave Brubeck (b. 1920) has expanded the rhythmic horizons for the general public, essaying with ever-increasing assurance time signatures like 5/4, 7/4 and even 13/4 while creating a body of work that is notable for its consistent levels of melodic content and harmonic invention. Recorded between 1959 and 1965, this five-disc set captures the Brubeck quartet featuring the floating alto saxophone of Paul Desmond (composer of the million-selling "Take Five"), at the peak of their powers. It features all five of Brubeck's Time albums including Time Out (1959), Time Further Out (1961), Countdown: Time in Outer Space (1961), Time Changes (1963-64) and Time In (1965). Many include rare bonus tracks and alternate takes, as well as Brubeck hits like It's a Raggy Waltz, Blue Rondo a la Turk, Unsquare Dance and, course, Take Five. The 5 CD box set also presents an improvisation from one of Dave's liturgical pieces, a variation of the folk song Frankie and Johnny, and Brubeck's work for quartet and 45-piece orchestra, Elementals. - Your gift with a $500 donation
